Life As We Knew It includes a series of etchings on paper and a series of stone memorials temporarily installed in public spaces. This text-based project names specific and previously common things that have been (temporarily?) lost due to the pandemic:
UNCOVERED SMILES
HUGS AND HANDSHAKES
FREEDOM
LIFE AS WE KNEW IT
THE OLD NORMAL
SOME SENSE OF SECURITY
CONTACT
CLOSENESS
For the etching series, zinc plates were prepared with an acid-resistant ground and etched in the ground. They were repeatedly buried in soil outside of my studio, unearthed and printed, and buried again. With each burial and subsequent printing over the course of several months, I hoped to restore the thing named on the plate so it would become clear and legible. So far, this has proven to be futile.
The temporary stone memorials carry the same texts as the etchings. They are made from cast concrete, sandblasted and spraypainted. I’m still waiting to see/decide if these will become permanent memorials.
