Shiftland is a series of mixed media prints and drawings on paper about a fictional land in transition, oblivious to its history, blinded by its present, slouching toward its future.
I invented a new land and used as its foundation the 5 aesthetic values – lightness, quickness, multiplicity, exactitude, and visibility – put forward by Italo Calvino in his collection of essays entitled, Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Shiftland itself is a drift in time and place, a speculative and alternative culture that strives, comically and unsuccessfully, to learn from history and past mistakes.
